The Department of Justice is looking into ties between Renee and Becca Good and far-left activist groups that have been courting mayhem in the state as both the fraud investigation and federal efforts to remove illegal immigrant criminals ramp up.
Six federal prosecutors resigned on Tuesday rather than conduct an investigation into Becca Good, the activist wife of Renee Good, who was killed while ramming her car into an ICE agent last week. Becca Good was outside the car at the time of the shooting filming the action between her wife and the officer while taunting law enforcement.
The New York Times reports that "the Justice Department launched an investigation to examine ties between Ms. Good and her wife, Becca, and several groups that have been monitoring and protesting the conduct of immigration agents in recent weeks." These prosecutors were reluctant to look into Good, who said after the shooting that it was all her fault.
The prosecutors further, per The New York Times, were displeased about the lack of an investigation into ICE agent Jonathan Ross, who fired the shots that killed Renee Good as her car accelerated into him. The state of Minnesota has also been under investigation by the Department of Justice for fraud in which primarily members of the Somali immigrant community took formed businesses and non-profits to obtain grants from the state to provide social services that they never delivered. Billions have been swindled under Minnesota's lax oversight.
Joseph H. Thompson, who was involved in that investigation for the US attorney's office and had successfully prosecuted dozens of defendants, was one of those who left his position. Thompson resigned "after senior Justice Department officials pressed for a criminal investigation into the action of the widow of Renee Nicole Good," the Times reported. Thompson also objected to the FBI taking the lead in investigating the shooting and leaving the state out of it.
Leading elected officials in the state, from Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey to Rep. Ilhan Omar have already declared their belief that the Ross was guilty of murder and that he was not acting in self-defense. There were likely concerns within the Department of Justice that should Ross face an investigation at the hands of state agencies, his guilt would have been pre-determined.
In addition to Thompson, Harry Jacobs, Melinda Williams, and Thomas Calhoun-Lopez all tendered their resignations. Walz said Thompson was "a principled public servant who spent more than a decade achieving justice for Minnesotans" and further said that this is "also the latest sign Trump is pushing nonpartisan career professionals out of the justice department, replacing them with his sycophants."
The Department of Justice is looking into ties between Renee and Becca Good and far-left activist groups that have been courting mayhem in the state as both the fraud investigation and federal efforts to remove illegal immigrant criminals ramp up. The women were engaged in a protest action in which Renee positioned her minivan in the middle of the street to block traffic while Becca filmed the ensuing, intended confrontation between Renee and law enforcement.
Becca Good commented after the shooting that she and Renee had "stopped to support our neighbors" and that in their protest, they "had whistles" while law enforcement "had guns." They also had their Honda Pilot, which was used both as a barricade and a weapon.
Following Renee Good's death, it was revealed that the two had ties to Minnesota ICE Watch, a group that organizes direct actions against federal law enforcement and had led trainings in the Twin Cities in the days leading up to the altercation. Renee Good leaves behind three children, one of whom, a 6-year-old, is now orphaned.
