Vice President Kamala Harris has embraced calls for an international war crimes investigation into Russia in light of the violence that has ensued in Ukraine after Russia invaded their neighboring nation.
Speaking in Warsaw with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Harris voiced concern over Russia's conduct in Ukraine, and agreed that there should be an international investigation into potential war crimes.
"Absolutely there should be an investigation," Harris said. "We have been witnessing for weeks, and certainly just in the last twenty-four hours, atrocities of just unimaginable proportion."
Harris went on to cite Russian bombing of a maternity hospital.
"We have witnessed pregnant women who were there for care for one reason being taken out because they required care because of an act of violence; unprovoked, unjustified."
The UN Human Rights Council voted on March 4 to condemn alleged violations committed by Russia, including possible war crimes. An agreement was reached to set up an investigation commission, as Reuters reports.
Russia and Eritrea voted against the motion, while thirteen others, including China, abstained.
"Those from Russia directing and committing violations against my people should be paying attention," Ukraine's UN ambassador said in Geneva. "The evidence is going to be collected; you are going to be identified, and you are going to be held to account."
