"And we’ve got a lot of tough questions that we need to ask the mayor, and the city council, and our representatives, and the county representatives, why didn’t you work to mitigate this? What was your brush mitigation program?"
As multiple wildfires burn homes, businesses, and thousands of acres in and around Los Angeles, the city’s Mayor Karen Bass was hit with backlash for being in Ghana attending the inauguration of the African country’s new president.
Bass was in Ghana as part of a four-member delegation from the US to attend the inauguration of new Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, per INKL News. Bass had been named to the delegation by President Joe Biden. Bass is reportedly on her way back to Los Angeles.
The fire began at around 10:30 am near 1190 North Piedra Morada Drive, the Los Angeles Fire Department said, and with wind speeds reaching at least 40 mph, the fire quickly spread, CBS News reported. As of 5:16 am, just under 3,000 acres have burned in the Palisades fire, less than 24 hours after the fire began. Also burning is the Eaton Fire, which started at around 6:20 pm on Tuesday just north of Pasadena. In that fire, around 2,300 acres have burned.
Rick Caruso, who lost against Bass in the 2022 mayoral election, told Fox 11 that "There’s no water in the Palisades. There’s no water coming out of the fire hydrants." He said "this is an absolute mismanagement by the city," adding, "we’ve got a mayor that’s out of the country, and we’ve got a city that’s burning, and there’s no resources to put out fires."
"It looks like we’re in a third world country here," he said. "And we’ve got a lot of tough questions that we need to ask the mayor, and the city council, and our representatives, and the county representatives, why didn’t you work to mitigate this? What was your brush mitigation program?"
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell said Bass "Should be fired," referring to a tweet that said multiple California fire departments donated firefighting equipment to Ukraine in 2022.
Bass put out a post early Wednesday morning stating that firefighting teams in the city "continue to work overnight to protect Angelenos affected by fires in LA." She was criticized in the comments about being overseas as her city burned.
"You’re not back yet?" one person wrote. Another added, "stay gone."
"You should be on the first flight back to LA and not in Ghana. Seriously. Vote differently CA. Get this woman out of office."
