Congress must not give [Biden] a free gift to further sabotage President Trump’s peace negotiations on the way out the door. Any Biden funding demands should be DOA,” said Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT)
He may be a lame-duck but President Joe Biden reportedly wants to go out spending more money on sustaining Ukraine in its war with Russia as he plans to ask for another $24 billion in military assistance. Even as the House of Representatives remains deadlocked over how to avoid a government shutdown in less than a month, the White House Office of Management and Budget suggested the new assistance could be shoveled into whatever legislation keeps the government running, according to Politico Pro.
Those representatives who have seen the latest aid package say it will directly inject US armaments manufacturers with another $8 billion for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and $16 billion to replenish the US weapons that have been given away to Ukraine.
But with President-elect Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day less than two months away, more Republicans than usual are saying “enough is enough” to more money for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Joe Biden just gave away 4.7 billion in your taxpayer dollars by unilaterally ‘forgiving’ loans to Ukraine. Congress must not give him a free gift to further sabotage President Trump’s peace negotiations on the way out the door. Any Biden funding demands should be DOA,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) posted on X.
Last week, the Biden-Harris administration said it wanted to wipe the slate clean on Ukrainian “loans” as State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Wednesday, per Reuters. "We have taken the step that was outlined in the law to cancel those loans," Miller said at a daily State Department news briefing. Miller said that the decision to forgive the $4.7 billion in loans was a recent one, while he added that Congress could still reverse that decision.
The Biden-Harris administration has repeatedly expressed its desire to “Trump proof” its Ukraine policy by creating a political consensus that Zelensky needs to continue to receive aid even after Trump becomes president. “President Biden will make the case that we do need ongoing resources for Ukraine beyond the end of his term,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” earlier this month, The New York Post noted.
“The threat to Ukraine will remain no matter what exactly happens on the battlefield or at the negotiating table, and the United States should not walk away from its commitment, either to Ukraine or to 50 nations that we have rallied in defense of Ukraine in both Europe and Asia,” Sullivan said.
The Biden-Harris regime has already spent almost $60 billion in military and administrative assistance on Ukraine. Earlier this month, on Sunday, the administration approved the use of US missiles to strike targets inside Russia, provoking threats of retaliation from Russia. The outgoing administration also approved the deployment of anti-personnel landmines in Ukraine that are still active and capable of blowing up civilians decades after being buried in the ground.
