The left-wing nonprofit watchdog group American Oversight is working to collect materials that could aid congressional investigations into the Trump administration, according to a report by Politico. The organization is preparing for the possibility that Democrats regain control of the House or Senate in the 2026 midterms, which would grant them the authority to issue subpoenas and launch investigations into the administration.

Referred to as the “Parallel Investigations Initiative,” the effort mirrors tactics used during Trump’s first term when Republicans had full control of all three branches of government. The group utilized the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), litigation, and judicial enforcement to obtain documents from the administration in anticipation of future Democratic congressional oversight.

Chioma Chukwu, the group’s executive director, stated that American Oversight intends to investigate the Trump administration, accusing Congress of failing to fulfill its oversight duties.

“As President Trump’s second term unfolds and Congress continues to abdicate its responsibility to conduct meaningful oversight, we remain steadfast in our commitment to conducting rigorous investigations into the administration’s anti-democratic actions,” Chukwu said. “Our efforts will establish a critical foundation for future congressional investigations that, when combined with decisive congressional action, will bring the truth to light and ensure accountability.”

Politico reported that American Oversight is working with House Oversight and Government Reform Committee ranking member Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) on these efforts. The group has scheduled a press call with Connolly on Wednesday regarding Trump’s firing of multiple agency inspectors general. Additionally, the organization has filed FOIA requests related to those firings.
