"Today, I'm also signing an executive order to instruct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparing the 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay," he said.
"Today, I'm also signing an executive order to instruct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparing the 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay," he said. "Most people don’t know about it. We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people. Some of them are so bad, we don’t even trust the countries to hold them, because we don’t want them coming back so we’re going to send them to Guantanamo. This will double our capacity immediately."
"That’s a tough place to get out of. Today’s signing brings us one step closer to eradicating migrant crime in our communities once and for all."
The announcement came ahead of Trump’s signing of the Laken Riley Act, which requires that the Department of Homeland Security detain noncitizens charged with or convicted of theft-related crimes, a crime that results in death or serious bodily injury, or assaulting a police officer. Trump called Riley a "brilliant and beautiful 22-year old nursing student from Georgia. The best in her class" who was "respected by everyone."
"To her friends and classmates, she was a light of warmth and kindness in every single room,” Trump said. “To her parents and family she was everything in the world. They’ve had a miserable period of time.”
This comes as deportation efforts have been underway since Trump was sworn into office on January 20. Among the arrests made by immigration authorities have been 50 members of the violent Tren de Aragua gang outside Denver, Colorado. Also among the arrested are multiple individuals highlighted by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in the first White House press briefing of the new Trump administration, including suspected terrorists, murderers, and child sexual abusers.
According to NBC News, between Trump taking office and Tuesday afternoon, 4,829 arrests have been made as part of the new administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, with an average of 753 arrests being made per day over the last six days. In comparison, the Biden administration’s daily average was 282 people per day as of September 2024, the latest data available.
