A Liberal MP has had his duties reduced after it was discovered that he defied party orders and left Canada for non-essential reasons.
On Wednesday, chief Liberal whip Steve MacKinnon announced that MP Yves Robillard would be censured for his decision to take a vacation outside Canada during the Parliamentary break.
As CTV reports, MacKinnon said he was "profoundly disappointed" in the MP's decision to leave Canada for non-essential purposes at a time when COVID-19 cases are on the rise.
Robillard, who represents the riding of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin, was subsequently removed from his role as member of the standing committee on national defence.
Canada's federal parties have taken varying positions on whether or not their MPs should stay close to home this holiday season. While the Conservatives have given MPs the green light to vacation abroad, NDP and Liberal MPs were told to avoid all non-essential travel outside the country.
The desire to restrict international travel comes as cases of Omicron continue to trend upwards.
On December 15, Prime Minister Trudeau sent out a tweet urging Canadians planning on vacationing abroad to change their plans and stay home. Trudeau suggested that with Omicron on the rise, "now is not the time for non-essential international travel."
