On Saturday, the Wyoming Republican Party voted to no longer recognize House Representative Liz Cheney as a Republican, and have called for her to be excommunicated by their national counterpart.
The state party's central committee voted 31-29 for the action, with around one-third of GOP leaders in Wyoming's counties voting for the same action in a following vote, according to the Associated Press.
"Previously mentioned in the resolution of censure, Representative Liz Cheney 'cast her vote in favor of impeachment without any quantifiable evidence of High Crimes or Misdemeanors,'" the resolution stated, according to the Casper Star Tribune. "As to date, no quantifiable and or undisputed evidence has been offered Representative Liz Cheney to defend her questionable decision."
The same body voted in February to censure Cheney for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role regarding the incident at the Capitol building on January 6.
A spokesperson for Cheney told the Associated Press it was "laughable" for anybody to suggest Cheney isn't a “conservative Republican.”
"She is bound by her oath to the Constitution," spokesman Jeremy Adler said. "Sadly a portion of the Wyoming GOP leadership has abandoned that fundamental principle and instead allowed themselves to be held hostage to the lies of a dangerous and irrational man."
Cheney was voted out of her leadership position as a chair for the House Republicans in May as a result of her impeachment vote, saying her decision to impeach was an act of conscience in defense of the Constitution, and claiming that Trump had "incited the mob" and "lit the flame" of violence.
She now faces at least four Republican opponents ahead of 2022's primary, including Trump-endorsed Cheyenne attorney Harriet Hageman, who previously ran for governor in 2018.
"It's fitting because Liz Cheney stopped recognizing what Wyomingites care about a long time ago. When she launched her war against President Trump, she completely broke with where we are as a state," Hageman said in a statement.
