The 55-year-old officer, whose identity has not been made public, has since been released from the hospital.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the incident took place shortly after 4 am on Sunday near the Prada at 30 East Oak Street. Officers were originally called following reports of an attempted burglary in progress, and upon arrival, they discovered a stolen Dodge Durango near the store, which had a smashed window.
When the suspect noticed law enforcement had arrived, he attempted to flee on foot, gun in hand. Now on the corner of State and Walton Streets, officers asked him to drop the firearm, and when he didn't a gun battle ensued, with both the suspect and officers unloading their weapons.
As ABC7 reports, the wounded officer can be heard on the scanner saying "I'm hit" after the suspect's bullet struck his left leg during the chase.
He was transported to nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital by his colleagues after being shot. Ald. Brian Hopkins confirmed on Monday that the officer had since been discharged from the hospital.
The suspect was also injured during the shootout, and taken to the same hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
Two weapons were recovered at the scene, which Hopkins said "both had extended magazines and automatic switches installed on them."
He added that an investigation had thus far "suggested that the offenders fired first."
According to Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling, there were multiple suspects involved in the alleged attempted burglary and a white Jeep, also stolen, was left in the middle of the road.
"They attempted to drive one vehicle, which was an SUV a Durango," he explained, "into the window of the Prada store. We don't have the exact number right now. We do know there were multiple individuals involved in this."
Snelling noted that while the injured suspect is in custody, his alleged accomplices are still at large.
