The former deputy leader of the Conservative Party Leona Alleslev has quit her position in the shadow cabinet to support Peter MacKay in the leadership contest.
Some reporters have claimed that there may be a deal involved with Alleslev's support. If MacKay wins the Conservative leadership contest, Alleslev will reportedly become the leader of the party in the House of Commons.
This is due to the fact that Peter MacKay does not have a seat in House of Commons—resigning from his old Nova Scotia seat in 2015.
On Monday, the Alberta-based Western Standard also reported that Alleslev agreed to a "behind-the-scenes agreement attached to the move."
A MacKay spokesperson denied that there was any secret deal between Alleslev and their campaign.
The Western Standard noted that the sources who leaked that Alleslev would become the deputy leader of the Conservative Party were the same sources who told them that there was a secret deal.
Alleslev was elected as a Liberal in 2015 before she crossed the floor to become a Conservative before the 2019 election. Scheer's decision to appoint an ex-Liberal as deputy leader was met with criticism by some factions within the Conservative Party.
