Mamdani now claims it wasn't his 'aunt' who was victim of 'Islamophobia' after 9/11, it was his 'father's cousin'

"And for the takeaway about my more than 10-minute address about Islamophobia in this race and in this city, to be the question of my aunt, tells you everything..."

On Friday, Queens State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani gave a bizarre speech alleging that there was rampant Islamophobia in New York City and among the other mayoral contenders. He claimed that his "aunt" stopped riding the subway after the Islamic extremist terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 because she was afraid in her hijab. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has gained the support of prominent Democrats like Hakeem Jeffries and Kathy Hochul.

Questions arose over the weekend as to which aunt this could be referring to. He only has one aunt, technically, his father's sister. That sister, Masuma Mamdani, both was not living in New York City at the time of the attacks of in the few years after, and is not pictured in professional photographs wearing a hijab.

On Monday, Mamdani was asked about the aunt, and in his reply, he indicated that the question was Islamophobic. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda but is of Indian descent, comes from a culture that refers to respected elders as "auntie" and "uncle" regardless of blood relation.

"So recently, in a recent address about Islamophobia, you referenced your aunt and the harassment she was facing post 9/11. Is that a blood relative?"

"Uh huh, yes," Mamdani replied. "I was speaking about my aunt, I was speaking about Zehra Fuhi, my father's cousin, who sadly passed away a few years ago. And for the takeaway about my more than 10-minute address about Islamophobia in this race and in this city, to be the question of my aunt, tells you everything about Andrew Cuomo and his inability to reckon with the crisis of his own making."

On Friday, he accused his political opponents Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa of being Islamophobic in their political attacks on him. In his speech, he said, "I want to use this moment to speak to the Muslims of New York City," Mamdani said. "I want to speak to the memory of my aunt, who stopped taking the subway after September 11 because she did not feel safe in her hijab."

JD Vance and others mocked him for essentially attempting to spin Muslims as the real victims of the extremist Islamist terror attack. He went on to talk about "violence against our mosques," but there haven't been any. Since 2021, there have been three graffiti instances on mosques.

About 9% of the city's population is Muslim. More Muslims keep moving to New York every year. New York has the largest Muslim population in the United States and more and more Muslim immigrants keep coming to the city from North Africa and the Middle East.

Libby is minimizing the aggression & hatred against Muslims in the US. Every mosque in Gaza has been bombed & destroyed by Jewish Supremacists with the full backing of the US. Muslims are hated by Zionist Jewish Supremacists & Christian Zionists. He may refer to his father's sisters & father's female cousins with the same term, aunt, so what? Did she fear wearing a hijab in a moment of extreme anti-Muslim hatred created & pushed by the Bush administration? Graffiti is vandalism. The graffiti on the mosques was the Star of David, a clear hate crime & a threat because Zionists themselves conflate Jewish symbols with their hate crimes, war crimes & genocide. A Zionist used the Star of David as a threat against Muslims. That is in fact intentionally creating a culture of fear for Muslims. An older woman he considers his aunt, probably in her 70's, felt scared because of anti-Muslim hatred. She did not attack the the US. Why does she need to be terrified to wear a symbol of her religious faith? Why can't he say that she felt scared because of that hatred?
