A man in England who had grandiose plans to propose to his girlfriend with candles ended up completely burning down their living room. Despite coming home to a charred apartment, she still winds up saying yes to the proposal. The couple are now engaged.

A man from Sheffield, UK, Albert Ndreu, wanted to make a big impression on his now spouse-to-be, Valerija Madevic. He filled their living room with a stunning array of balloons, along with more than 100 tea lights.

He put out a bottle of wine, dimmed the lights and put some romantic music on, and then left to pick Madevic up from her work, showing up with flowers, and the couple returned back to their no longer so cozy apartment. It was just around 8:30pm at this point.

Last night we were called to a marriage proposal that didn't quite go to plan. Want to hear more? Yes, we thought you...

They returned to a shocking scene of smoke pouring out their apartment window, and fire crews arriving.

Ndreu decided to improvise. He got down on one knee, took out a little box, and showed her the ring, telling her that he had messed up the scenario and still asking for her hand in marriage. Despite the obvious disaster, she said yes to the proposal.

The couple have been together for approximately one year. They claim to be madly in love with one another. “We spoke for hours and hours and talked about anything and everything,” Ndreu said. “We got on like a house on fire, but maybe we took that a bit too literally.”

Ndreu claimed he just wanted to do something special for Madevic, the love of his life, and said that he had put more than four hours into the unfortunate setup. “I was so worried about everything going wrong I never imagined I could set the house on fire.”, he later told the press.

Thankfully, nobody was killed or injured in the incident.

The soon-to-be married couple, in a gesture of thanks, wants to make the members of the fire department who showed up at the scene guests of honor at their wedding, which is planned for the anniversary of the fire.
