Donovan Miller, 31, will appear in court next month over the horrific murder of his 76-year-old grandmother. He stands accused of allegedly repeatedly raping her corpse after strangling her to death last year at her home in east London.
According to Daily Mail, Miller allegedly choked and then beat his grandmother, Phyllis Grant, over the head with a vase, which ultimately killed her. When paramedics arrived, Donovon Miller admitted to raping her corpse.
On March 25, 2021, Miller called police saying that he had killed his grandmother the previous night. On the night of the arrest, Miller told paramedics at the scene, "I raped her as well for what it's worth, yesterday and today" and later confirmed the rape allegations to authorities.
Miller also told police that he has a cocaine dependency but has no history with mental health issues. He appeared in court through a video link from the John Howard Centre secure psychiatric unit, Daily Mail reports.
During his court appearance, Miller took a plea deal and admitted to manslaughter and sexual penetration of a corpse. He denied murder charges. The Crown Prosecution Service accepted the plea and he will be sentenced next month where he will either have to serve time in prison or will be sentenced to a hospital order.
Prosecutor Caroline Carberry said, 'Careful consideration has been given in advance of today to the acceptability of a plea and in light of the conclusions of three forensic psychiatric consultants, the Crown's position is that this is a proper approach to take in this case.'
The presiding judge told Miller, "The fact you pleaded guilty today will be taken into account by the sentencing judge," according to Daily Mail.
Phyllis Grant was described by her peers as "lovely" and a "matriarch of the community" that regularly attended church services.
