"He doesn't have a license. He's suspended and he's just driving."
Update: A judge ordered that Corey Harris’ license suspension be lifted in 2022, according to WXYZ. The Michigan Secretary of State’s office said that they never received the clearance from the Saginaw County Friend of the Court, and thus his record still stated that his license was suspended. The suspension was part of a child support case.
A Michigan man who had been busted for driving with an allegedly suspended license shocked the judge overseeing his case when he appeared in court via Zoom from behind the wheel of his car. The defendant, 44-year-old Corey Harris, calmly parked the vehicle as Judge J. Cedric Simpson, looked on in disbelief. The strange series of events took place on May 15, and footage has since gone viral on social media.
"Mr. Harris, are you driving?" Judge Simpson asked.
"Actually, I'm pulling into my doctor's office," Harris replied.
Harris asked the court to "just give me one second" to park his car, and proceeded to do so as Simpson looked on in disbelief. When he finally confirmed that he was stationary, proceedings continued.
His public defender turned to address Simpson. "We are respectfully requesting an adjournment in this matter of possibly two to four weeks if the court would allow," she asked.
"Okay, so maybe I don’t understand something," the judge replied. "This is a driving while license suspended [case], and he was just driving, and he didn't have a license."
As Harris looked on, realizing what he'd done, his lawyer answered, "those were the charges, your honor, yes."
"No I'm looking at his record," Simpson replied, an amused smile forming on his face. "He doesn't have a license. He's suspended and he's just driving."
"That is correct, your honor," Harris' public defender replied.
Simpson paused for a moment, shrugged, and said, "I don't even know why he would do that."
"Defendant's bond is revoked in this matter," he added. "Defendant is to turn himself in to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 pm today. Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond."
