Mini data centers could be installed in residential homes—if Nvidia and new start-up have their way

Nvidia and a California start-up, Span, are looking to put mini data centers on your house as well as in personal businesses.

Nvidia, the tech giant generating AI chips and on the cutting edge of the technology, is collaborating with Span to sell "nodes" called XFRA units and install them on the sides of homes and businesses so that cloud AI providers can use excess electricity from the public networks.

"Fundamentally, it’s an infrastructure play,” Arch Rao, founder and CEO of Span, told CNBC. “We’re uniquely positioned to build infrastructure that can simultaneously help us meet what is clearly an insatiable demand for more compute, much more cost effectively, while benefiting individual consumers.”

The units, also thought of as "mini data centers," are a small electric panel, an XFRA unit, a battery, and sometimes solar panels. Homeowners will pay a flat fee for both electricity and Wi-Fi.

“If you are one of the homes that is hosting an XFRA node, XFRA will then give you compensation for energy and internet usage,” Rao said. “We expect that the value there is a heavily discounted cost of energy and internet.”

PulteGroup, which is one of the largest homebuilders in the nation, is testing the use and economics of installing them in a few communities.

“There is certainly opportunity, as SPAN can provide homeowners with access to innovative technology and potential income generation that can help offset monthly energy costs,” a PulteGroup spokesperson said in a statement. “On a larger scale, if the technology proves out, it might also keep local infrastructure from being overburdened which could keep land open for other uses, such as building homes.”
