A Minnesota high school has warned students they could face suspension if they “make light” of actions carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Crime Watch Minneapolis reported that Edina High School principal Paul Paetzel informed parents in an email that the school would impose discipline for language in support of ICE.

“As we continue to grow as a community, it is essential that we are clear about the expectations we hold for language and behavior that honor the dignity of every student,” the email read. “Making light of immigration threats or referencing ICE in ways that cause fear or humiliation is a serious offense and not representative of our core values. Behavior of this nature fundamentally violates our commitment to providing a safe and equitable learning environment free from harassment. Such language and behaviors directly contradict Edina Public Schools' vision and mission, and what we expect of our students.”

“If this type of behavior occurs, we will honor the discipline policy and move forward with consequences up to and including suspension. Our responsibility is to protect every student's right to feel safe, respected, and valued at school,” the principal added.

The warning comes as Minnesota has seen an increase in ICE activity after President Donald Trump turned his sights toward the state’s large Somali migrant community, which has been accused by federal authorities of widespread fraud. ICE has recently conducted multiple arrests in the Twin Cities area, prompting protests and clashes between activists and federal agents.

On Friday, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin announced that ICE had carried out more than 400 arrests since the start of Operation Metro Surge, which included “pedophiles, rapists, and violent thugs.”

“Tim Walz and Jacob Frey failed to protect the people of Minnesota. They let these monsters and child predators roam free. Thanks to our brave law enforcement, Minnesota is safer with these thugs off their streets. Instead of thanking our law enforcement for removing criminals from their communities, Tim Walz and Jacob Frey continue to demonize our brave law enforcement,” she said.
