A mom is suing TikTok after her ten-year-old daughter died from attempting a challenge she saw on the video streaming platform.
Ten-year-old Nylah Anderson died on Dec. 12 2021, after attempting a social-media challenge in which participants force themselves to pass out by holding their breath until they pass out from hypoxia.
According to court documents, mother Tawainna Anderson came home on Dec. 7 2021, to find Nylah unconscious. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. She died five days later.
According to People, "Anderson claims her daughter came across the challenge while using TikTok, the popular social media network where users watch and share videos."
Anderson described her daughter as "an active, happy, healthy, and incredibly intelligent child" who could speak three languages at the age of ten.
She is suing "for multiple damages, including wrongful death and negligence," claiming the challenge was designed purposefully to attract girls Nylah's age.
She also claims TikTok is at fault because its algorithm is designed to push such content.
