April's tally brings the total number of terror suspects arrested trying to cross the southern border illegally in Fiscal Year 2023 to nearly 100. FY23 has quickly become a record-breaking year for Biden's border crisis, with more apprehensions than ever before.
According to the Federalist, of the 98 foreign terror suspects caught making their way across the border in FY23, all but two were trying to enter the United States via Mexico. The others came south via the country's border with Canada.
While terror suspects make up a small portion of the millions of illegal migrants apprehended at the border, the rapid increase in their presence has shocked lawmakers and citizens alike.
"Those 16 individuals are only the ones we know about," the Republican House Homeland Security Committee tweeted in regard to those detained in April. "Imagine how many have crossed Biden's open border undetected."
In May, Republican chairmen of the House Committee on Homeland Security sent a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray calling on their respective organizations to take action and solve the crisis. They cited the arrests of Afghan and Pakistani nationals on the FBI's terror watchlist, one of whom entered the country illegally with a group of migrants near Otay Mesa, California.
The chairmen said that the arrests and April statistics "raise serious questions about the security of our Southwest border and the potential for terrorists to take advantage of the glaring vulnerabilities due to the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies."
Their sentiments were also shared by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who suggested that the Biden administration was essentially providing "an open invitation to even the most wanted terrorists in the world to come to America," adding that, "they know they'll never have to leave."
