Police in Columbia, South Carolina have arrested a mother who reportedly set fire to her car with her 14-month-old baby inside along Interstate 126, according to WUSA9.

Caylin Allise Watson, 23, from Elgin is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, charged with attempted murder, third degree arson, and abuse and infliction of great bodily harm upon a child.

Officers said shortly after 1:30pm on Sunday, May 17, Watson pulled alongside mile marker 1 on Interstate-126 westbound. She then set her car on fire while her son sat inside.

The child suffered severe burns all over his body and is in critical condition at the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia. Watson was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries before being relocated to jail.

Police reported that four bystanders who were traveling in the same direction saw the fire and stopped to assist by calling 9-1-1 or getting out of their cars to help the child inside the vehicle.

Officers at the Columbus Police Department (CPD) arrived on the scene shortly after, with the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) putting out the flames. Watson was immediately detained after evidence suggested that she had intentionally ignited the vehicle.

The South Carolina Law Enforcementt Division (SLED) aided the CPD with processing the crime scene.
