Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX maven, said on Thursday that he will allocate $100 million to be used for solutions for the world's carbon footprint problem.

Elon Musk has had a great year, mainly due to soaring Tesla stock. He has consistently been either the wealthiest or second wealthiest person on the planet for months now, jockeying always with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

"Am donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology," said Musk, in his typical manner.

According to The Byte, the technology at this time consists of concepts, all of them at the theoretical level; nothing has been tried in real life yet. Most of these concepts center around some method of being able to filter carbon out of the air somehow.

Critics have mentioned that there are many problems with these types of ideas. What type of potential use this carbon would have or where it is stored is still "up in the air", so to speak. There are also potential problems of scale, as any such effort would have to be truly massive to make a difference in the world's climates.

Bill Gates, on the other hand, has proposed the idea of temporarily blocking the sun so that the Earth can have a chance to cool down.
