The mother of a Midshipman who attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School was shot at an Annapolis hotel while visiting to attend Induction Day.
Police have identified the victim as 57-year-old Michelle Jordan Cummings, from Houston, Texas. She was sitting on a patio at the upscale Graduate Hotel when she was shot Tuesday morning.
Multiple shots were fired according to police, including at a parked car with people in it. Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson said he cannot explain how the bullets travelled to the elevated patio of the hotel.
The police department says it has leads on a suspect, however Jackson opted not to share any additional information.
Annapolis politicians and the Naval Academy both offered condolences, according to the Capital Gazette.
Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said in a statement; "We are focused on getting guns off the street but it only takes one criminal with a gun for the results to be tragic. This was a horrific outcome for the kind of everyday gun violence that many cities across America see. Annapolis is sadly not immune."
He also said at a press conference that the city of Annapolis is safe. This is something which was echoed by Jackson, who said that shootings like this were rare.
In an email, the Naval Academy stated that it "extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim from this morning’s shooting, and is providing the necessary counseling and services to those at the Naval Academy affected by this tragedy".
A GoFundMe has been started for Cummings family, so far, over $65,000 has been raised.
