The last 24-hour period reported in the province of Ontario has seen a whopping 3,422 new cases as numbers continue to creep up to unprecedented levels, health officials confirm.

For several days now, the number of new cases has been over 3000 per day, which means that  in itself, each number would have broken the previous record of a few short weeks ago. The current record stands at a shocking 4249 new cases in one day.

According to CTV News, the positivity rate is 5.2 percent, out of 60,183 new tests performed during the same 24-hour period.

At the same time, 3,078 old cases of the novel coronavirus have been resolved. Unfortunately, 69 of those cases resulted in death. The running total of coronavirus-related death now stands at 5,409.

As usual the urban centers were hardest hit. There were 1,035 new cases reported in Toronto, 585 in Peel Region, and 254 in Windsor-Essex. In addition, Niagara Region had 186 new cases, Middlesex-London had 166, Ottawa 144 and Waterloo 132.

Residents of Ontario have just entered on Thursday into a 28-day mandatory strict lockdown and a state of emergency issued by Premier Doug Ford in response to the growing case count, and the rapidly shrinking capacity of the province's intensive care wards.
