"I will be joining the chairman in calling for the resignation of the director."
Raskin commented in his closing statement, "I don't want to add to the director's terrible horrible no good very bad day, but I will be joining the chairman in calling for the resignation of the director just because I think that this relationship is irretrievable at this point."
"I think that the director has lost the confidence of Congress at a very urgent and tender moment in the history of the country, and we need to very quickly move beyond this," Raskin added.
Other Democrats that have called on Cheatle to resign included Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) as well as Brendan Boyle (D-PA). Boyle was the first one to do so.
“I am calling on Director Cheatle to resign immediately following last weekend’s shooting of a Presidential candidate in Western Pennsylvania,” Boyle wrote in a statement online.
“The evidence coming to light has shown unacceptable operational failures. I have no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service if Director Cheatle chooses to remain in her position,” he added.
The hearing comes after the USSS had several preventable security failures that led to an assassination attempt on Donald Trump while he was speaking at a Bulter, Pennsylvania rally on July 13. Trump was shot in the ear with the bullet being less than an inch away from taking his life. Others in the crowd were shot. 50-year-old Corey Comperatore died after being shot while he shielded his wife and daughters from the spray of bullets.
57-year-old Marine veteran David Dutch as well as 74-year-old James Copenhaver were also struck by the shots. Dutch was put into a medically induced coma to be treated and both were stabilized after the critical injuries.
