"We have under the federal work-study program now allows students to get paid through federal work-study, to register people, and to be nonpartisan poll workers."
Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday that the government would pay college students through the federally-funded work-study program to register voters and work as poll workers.
"We have been doing work to promote voter participation for students. And for example, we have under the federal work-study program now allows students to get paid through federal work-study, to register people, and to be nonpartisan poll workers. As we know this is important for a number of reasons, one, to engage our young leaders in this process and activate them in terms of their ability to strengthen our communities," Harris said.
According to the Department of Education, the work-study program awards students with funds for day-to-day expenses at college, but the student must earn those funds through a work-study job.
In a memo published on Monday, the Department of Education clarified that work-study funds could be used for voter registration jobs.
"The Department is today clarifying that FWS funds may be used for employment by a Federal, State, local, or Tribal public agency for civic engagement work that is not associated with a particular interest or group," the memo read.
According to the Daily Mail, Harris also said these college workers would also be used to fill vacant poll worker roles who left after the 2020 election.
