A spokesperson confirmed that she will not be in attendance.
According to ABC News, a spokesman confirmed that she will not be in attendance. This follows a severe hip injury that Pelosi suffered while on a trip to Europe. Michelle Obama has also confirmed that she will not be in attendance, however, her husband and other former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton will attend the ceremony with their wives.
Notably, Pelosi was in attendance at Trump’s first inauguration in 2017. The Pelosi spokesman, however, did not disclose why she will not be attending this time around. Other Democratic lawmakers from the House of Representatives are also expected to skip the inauguration, according to Politico.
Pelosi has attended a total of 11 inaugurations, with her first being for former President John F. Kennedy. The 84-year-old politician underwent hip replacement surgery after she fell and fractured her hip during a trip to Luxembourg with a bipartisan congressional delegation in December to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
At the time of Pelosi's injury, then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had also just suffered a fall in Congress. The two events sparked some online conversation regarding term limits for senators and House members.
Some figures that are expected to be at Trump’s inauguration aside from the usual political class include Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, X owner and tech executive Elon Musk, as well as Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.
