President Donald Trump officially announced the move of Space Command from its location in Colorado to Alabama on Tuesday. The Trump administration will reverse a Biden-era decision in moving its location to Colorado.

"As you know, this has been going on for a long period of time, and I am thrilled to report that the US Space Command Headquarters will move to the beautiful locale of a place called Huntsville, Alabama, forever to be known from this point forward as Rocket City," Trump said.

The president also slammed Colorado for their mail-in voting system.  "The problem I have with Colorado, one of the big problems, they do mail-in voting, they went to all mail-in voting, so they have automatically crooked elections," Trump said.

Leading up the official announcement, the AP reported that two sources said the announcement would be made about the location of Space Command. On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also said, “The president will be making an exciting announcement related to the Department of Defense."

The functions of Space Command include operating satellites for troop navigation as well as communication. Space Command will also serve to give warnings of missile launches. Both states, Alabama and Colorado, have been vying for the headquarters of Space Command, as the operation can lead to economic development around it. Huntsville, Alabama is the location of the Army’s Redstone Arsenal in addition to the NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Under the Biden administration, the location of the temporary headquarters was selected in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2023. The Biden administration said that having Space Command at this location would have avoided disruptions in readiness for the headquarters.

However, a review from the Department of Defense over the decision determined that there was no strong reason as to why Colorado would have gotten the Space Command over Alabama. Colorado happens to be Democrat-led state while Alabama is led by a Republican governor.

Trump, both in his first and second term, has been pushing for more military capabilities for the US in space. Trump has also proposed that there be a National Guard for the Space Force after the branch of the military began in his first term.
