BREAKING: Canadians without income eligible for $2,000 a month

Trudeau gave information about the aid package passed this morning in the House of Commons early Wednesday morning, announcing $2,000 payouts for the next four months for workers who are out of a job and are not receiving pay cheques.

"As the situation evolves we are adjusting our efforts to help you better... If you've lost your job, were on a contract or self-employed this benefit will be there for you."

Trudeau also announced that the government would be looking into support for Canadian media companies, as media continue to lay off people.

We are absolutely looking at more direct support for businesses," Trudeau says. "We are working with business groups we are working with small businesses, hearing their concerns.

"Final paycheques are starting to come in now and people don't know when the next one will come... The CERB (Canadian Emergency Relief Benefit) is going to flow as a way of giving [unemployed Canadians] $2,000 every month for the next 4 months so we can get through this."

A portal for applications will be made available "as quickly as possible," he said.

Trudeau stated that over 140,000 Employment Insurance claims have been processed since Monday.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau later said the CERB would be fully accessible to Canadians without paychecks, but have earned over $5,000 in the last 12 months.

The Trudeau Liberals have their sights set on having the payments ready by April 6.

In total, the government will provide an estimated $52 billion to Canadian businesses and individuals. An addition $55 billion will be provided through tax deferrals.

The prime minister also says Ottawa is doing its best to make medical supplies for hospitals and medical workers in need, saying that more coordination is needed between provincial and federal government.

The Liberals announced today that the country has sharply increased the number of tests being done per day, saying that the country's nurses and medical workers are performing 10,000 tests a day.

Trudeau went on to stress the importance of self isolation for those who have recently travelled.

In regards to the prime minister's familial health, he says his wife Sophie, who tested positive for the coronavirus after a visit to the United Kingdom, feels "much, much better."
