BREAKING: Five people shot in Toronto, including three children

Police were called to the intersection of Tandridge and Byng, just west of Albion around 8 pm on Saturday.

CP 24 reports that "Five people, including three children, have been injured in a shooting in Etobicoke" according to paramedics, adding that "one of the children was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries while another was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries."

The third child has minor injuries.

Independent journalist Andrew Collins tweeted that the shooting took place at a birthday party. Toronto Sun reported that the celebration was for a toddler at a Rexdale townhouse complex. "There was a birthday party going on for a one-year-old at the time," Supt. Ron Taverner told reporters at the scene.

"There has to be a reason why that particular party was being targeted, but I can't answer right now as to the real motive of the shooting," Taverner said.

The shooter or shooters fled the scene in a vehicle. Investigators are reviewing security video but no suspect descriptions were released.

"Firing a gun anywhere anytime in the City of Toronto is unacceptable. Doing so at a child’s birthday party goes way beyond that," tweeted Toronto Mayor John Tory. "My thoughts are with the children who were injured and their families and friends as they deal with the terrible impact of Saturday night's shooting in Rexdale."

"This is a shocking and outrageous act of gun violence that comes amidst the work Toronto Police and the City have been doing that has led to a decline in shootings over the last year," Tory added in the press statement Sunday. "I know we all want answers to why this tragedy happened and to see those responsible face justice. Police are working non-stop to find those responsible for this shooting."

Tory urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers to send "a clear message that such dangerous and brazen behaviour that threatens the lives of innocent children will not be tolerated."
