A press conference is expected later today by federal health ministers to provide more detail.
The AstraZeneca vaccine will be the third jab approved in Canada in the Trudeau Liberals' heavily-touted vaccine portfolio.
Over 20 million doses of the vaccine have been ordered for Canada.
Two other vaccines are still under review by Health Canada, including the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and the Novavax vaccine, which Canada has signed an agreement with to be produced in Montreal.
