Chris Bryant, a Labour MP in the British Parliament, nominated Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for a Nobel Peace Prize this year.
This makes for the 318th nomination for 2020, the 4th-highest amount of nominations ever for a single year for this particular prize.
According to The Hill, Bryant said in an interview with the Standard, “When others have resorted to violent solutions, [Biden] has argued that the best force is the force of argument. Because guns can stop a heart but well-placed words can change many hearts, and many hearts can change a world.”
The Biden nomination comes after Trump received three nominations for his work in the Middle East, Kosovo, and his overall Trump Doctrine. "For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other peace prize nominees," opined Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament, upon nominating Trump for the prize this year.
Biden was a strong advocate for the Iraq war in 2002, voting to launch it in 2002. "I believe it is a march to peace and security. I believe that failure to overwhelmingly support this resolution is likely to enhance the prospects that war will occur," Biden said at the time.
People eligible for submitting nominations for Nobel prizes consist of university professors, academy members, scientists, previous Nobel leaders and representatives of national governments.
