Wright was fatally shot in April 2021 by former Officer Kim Potter who said she mistakenly used her firearm instead of her stun gun.
Though a monetary value has been agreed on, a statement from the family’s attorneys said that the settlement will not be finalized until an agreement is formalized for additional police training on issues such as officer intervention, implicit bias, weapons confusion, mental health crises among other issues, in addition to a permanent memorial to Wright,
Family lawyer Antonio Romanucci said in the statement, "The comprehensive settlement in this tragic case will provide a meaningful measure of accountability to the family for their deep loss of a son, sibling and father, and they hope and believe the measures of change to policing, policies and training will create important improvements to the community in Daunte’s name. Nothing can bring him back, but the family hopes his legacy is a positive one and prevents any other family from enduring the type of grief they will live with for the rest of their lives."
Wright fled a traffic stop after being pulled over for expired tags and an air freshener hanging from his mirror. Potter tried to arrest Wright after realizing he was wanted on a non-felony warrant and shot him after he jumped back into his car. Potter shouted "Taser! Taser!" before she shot.
According to the Daily Mail, Wright allegedly had a criminal history which included robbery and assault which crippled a childhood friend.
