Canadian authorities increase fine to $5k for not staying in quarantine hotels
The federal government of Canada has decided to increase the fine for people returning to the country who don’t quarantine in one of the designated hotels, starting on Friday.
The federal government of Canada has decided to increase the fine for people returning to the country who don't quarantine in one of the designated hotels, starting on Friday.
The government has already fined a combined total of over 1400 Canadian citizens for breaking what are some of the world's strictest rules for travelers returning to their countries. More than 1000 of those fines were for refusing to go to a quarantine hotel; the rest were for arriving without the the required PCR test.
According to the Ministry of Travel's official website, "All travellers entering Canada, regardless of citizenship, must follow testing and quarantine requirements to keep Canadians safe, particularly given the new COVID-19 variants in Canada and around the world."
The controversial measure has been in place since late January of 2021, and are in effect until Jun. 21 2021, although they may wind up being extended, especially considering the recent government announcement.
In fact, it has been thought that many travelers are simply choosing to pay the fine, which currently has a maximum of $3000, since the hotel bills are often coming in at a higher amount.
