CBC’s The National fails to cover disgraced former Liberal MP getting charged by RCMP
This was reported widely and was the major Canadian political news of the day on Friday, but CBC’s The National failed to cover the story on their nightly broadcast.
Disgraced former Liberal MP Raj Grewal was charged with four counts of breach of trust and one count of fraud over $5,000 by RCMP. This was reported widely and was the major Canadian political news of the day on Friday, but CBC's The National failed to cover the story on their nightly broadcast according to Senator Denise Batters.
CBC's entire budget comes from the federal government, yet they declined to cover the RCMP's indictment against a former Liberal MP.
The claim by the RCMP is that Grewel neglected to report to the ethics commissioner that he had millions of dollars in personal loans, which would be "a criminal breach of trust."
The RCMP said that "It is alleged that Mr. Grewal failed to report his receipt of millions in personal loans to the Ethics Commissioner, in circumstances that constitute a criminal breach of trust."
"It is further alleged that Mr. Grewal solicited loans for his own personal benefit in connection with the use of his public office, and that he administered his government-funded constituency office budget for his own personal benefit."
Grewal, who has denied the charges, reportedly incurred more than $1 million in debt. He was allegedly seeking treatment "related to a gambling problem that led him to incur significant personal debts."
CBC did cover the story on their websites, but it was lacking from the national news broadcasts.
