On Friday, the city of Minneapolis settled a civil lawsuit by paying $27 million to the estate of George Floyd, who famously died in police custody on May 25, 2020.
The settlement will mean that the civil case will not have to see a courtroom.
According to AP News, this settlement is the biggest pre-trail settlement in a civil case ever.
Ben Crump, the lawyer representing Floyd's family, said that this historic settlement "sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end."

"I hope that today will center the voices of the family and anything that they would like to share. But I do want to, on behalf of the entire City Council, offer my deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and all of our community who are mourning his loss."
The settlement included within it $500k in funds earmarked for directly investing into the neighborhood where Floyd died. The neighborhood was the scene of violent riots that were fatal and caused lots of personal injuries and damage to properties in the area.
A similar settlement was reached in 2019, where the family of Justine Ruszczyk Damond got $20 million from the city in a very similar wrongful death action.
Criminal charges against Derek Chauvin, the one officer charged criminally in the death of Floyd, are still pending, and the process against him is ongoing.
