Conservatives call for Trudeau to stay in quarantine facility upon return home from G7 trip in Europe

For months, Canadians returning from any foreign country have been required to pay thousands of dollars to stay at a quarantine hotel for at least 3 days. Conservatives MPs and many Canadians are calling for Trudeau to follow his own rules and stay in an already approved quarantine hotel, like he forced others to do.

When Trudeau and his entourage return from Europe they will be given white glove service with their own hotel especially set aside for them. Trudeau and company will not be staying in an approved quarantine hotel, but instead a special hotel being prepared in Ottawa.

All international flights into Canada have be diverted to either Montreal, Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver since the start of the year. When travellers arrive, they have to stay in a designated quarantine hotel until they receive a negative test, and then can return home to finish their isolation. Trudeau's hotel will be in Ottawa, and he will stay with the media and diplomats that accompanied his Europe trip.

During a House of Commons Health Committee hearing, Conservative MP John Barlow questioned the head of the Public Health Agency of Canada Ian Stewart about the specifics of the plan and the agency's involvement.

"I just find it strange that the prime minister of our country is travelling internationally, which he’s asking every Canadian not to do, and there wouldn’t be a very detailed strategy and plan for his quarantine," he said.

Stewart defended the plan saying, "The essential elements are that they are tested on arrival, that they’re held in a safe space until the results are known, and then they’re released into an approved quarantine."

An expert advisory panel has already recommended that the federal government end the quarantine hotel program as vaccinations increase and infections taper off. "We’re taking the testing panel report very seriously and we’re giving it full consideration," Stewart told the Committee.
