Deputy killed, 2 more injured in Houston ‘ambush’ shooting

The incident occurred around 2 am just outside of the 45 Norte Sports Bar.

According to The New York Times, the three Harris County deputies went outside due to reports of a disturbance, possibly a robbery. Authorities said that the three deputies were detaining one man when they were shot from behind.

Of the two surviving deputies, it appears that one sustained a gunshot wound to the back, and another to the foot.

"We believe they were ambushed," commented Jim Jones, the Houston Police Department's Executive Assistant Chief, during a press conference on Saturday morning. Jones also then mentioned that the Houston Police Department currently has a "person close to the scene" currently in custody.

"We're not sure if that is a witness or a suspect. There is still a lot of investigation to be done," continued Jones at the briefing.

"What happened tonight was evil," commented Const. Mark Herman of Precinct Four of the Houston Police Department. "And now the good is going to sweep in, and I hope for swift justice."

Houston, like many other major cities in the US, is seeing a marked increase in crime, especially in officer shootings, since the start of the pandemic.
