DOJ will not investigate Cuomo’s nursing home fiasco

Back in Mar. 2020, Cuomo had issued an executive order insisting that COVID patients be admitted to publicly-ran nursing homes, which resulted in outbreaks and a huge spike in deaths in these facilities.

According to the Gothamist, there was also a discrepancy between the number of COVID cases reported in those homes, to the tune of some 40 percent.

The DOJ in Aug. 2020 started investigating possible wrongdoing by the Cuomo administration in New York State regarding the nursing homes issue. They also requested information into similar occurrences in Pennsylvania, Michigan and New Jersey.

"We have reviewed the information provided by these states along with additional information available to the Department. Based on that review, we have decided not to open a CRIPA investigation of any public nursing facility within New York, Pennsylvania, or Michigan at this time," said Deputy Assistant Attorney General Joe Gaeta in a statement.

Many House Republicans are frustrated by the news, and have made their frustration public.

"Families who lost loved ones deserve better," opined Rep. Steve Scalise, (R-LA), who learned about the DOJ's decision to drop the cases by a letter from the DOJ themselves.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the chair of the House Republican Conference went one step further, saying that dropping these investigations "makes President Biden complicit in the criminal corruption scandal and coverup of deaths of thousands of vulnerable seniors."
