Smartmatic, a company that makes voting machines used in the US and elsewhere, filed a defamation lawsuit on Thursday against Fox Corporation and three of its anchors. The lawsuit was filed in the NY State Supreme Court and names the Fox Corporation, as well as individual anchors Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro.
According to the New York Times, this lawsuit also includes legal action against attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, both 0f whom appeared on Fox News to dispute the results of the Nov. 3 2020 Presidential election.
The complaint alleged that the above parties "created a story about Smartmatic", and that "Fox joined the conspiracy to defame and disparage Smartmatic and its election technology and software."
"The story turned neighbor against neighbor. The story led a mob to attack the US Capitol," read the complaint, which is 276 pages in its entirety and seeks a minimum of $2.7 billion in punitive damages.
Smartmatic machines, along with those of Dominion Voting Systems, have been accused of being compromised during the presidential elections, a claim which is at the root of the above legal action. Dominion has also filed its own lawsuits.
A spokesperson for Fox responded to the suit. "Fox News Media is committed to providing the full context of every story with in-depth reporting and clear opinion. We are proud of our 2020 election coverage and will vigorously defend this meritless lawsuit in court."
