Hamas attacks Israel with rockets, violence erupts in Jerusalem
The Islamic extremist organization Hamas has launched a barrage of at least 50 rockets at various civilian targets on Israel on Monday just after sundown, after police and rioters clashed at the Al-Aqsa mosque earlier that day.
The Islamic extremist organization Hamas has launched a barrage of at least 50 rockets at various civilian targets on Israel on Monday just after sundown, after police and rioters clashed at the Al-Aqsa mosque earlier that day.
"JUST IN - Barrage of missiles fired upon Ashkelon, Israel" reads the caption to the below video, which captures the rockets in flight in shocking detail:
"Another video: Gaza/ southern Israel skies; Rockets fired from Gaza; Iron Dome System interception attempts" ... one can hear the people clapping as the Iron Dome shreds incoming rockets, as can bee seen on the video:
The IDF hasn't stopped at words. They also launched retaliatory strikes in Gaza, killing at least nine.
Meanwhile, at the Al-Aqsa mosque, the struggle continues between Israeli police and violent rioters. The below video shows a very calm and collected reporter navigating people through the violence and chaos:
As the reporter indicates, people are throwing stones at police, who are trying to disperse the crowd with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. So far, clashes have seen more than 300 Palestinians injured, along with 21 police officers and seven Israeli civilians.
Tensions have been building in Jerusalem and elsewhere during this month of Ramadan, which has been a typical time of year for things to heat up. Israel stationed police at the mosque in response, which is one of Islam's most sacred sites.
Monday is also Jerusalem Day, and locals typically hold a big parade through the Old City to commemorate such. There is some speculation that this also has to do with the recent violence and rocket attacks.
Allegedly, Hamas was furious about this and threatened Israel with violence if they didn't draw down police presence there, with which Israel had no intention of complying. This is considered to be a probable explanation for the sudden rocket attacks.
"Israel has every right to defend itself against violence and the barrage of rockets from Hamas. The United States unequivocally stands with our ally Israel and the Jewish people," tweeted the Republican party leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)in support:
According to Axios, "the White House weighed in on Sunday when national security adviser Jake Sullivan called his Israeli counterpart Meir Ben Shabbat. Sullivan also 'encouraged the Israeli government to pursue appropriate measures to ensure calm during Jerusalem Day commemorations' being held on Monday, according to a White House summary of the call."
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) also had very harsh words for the Biden team regarding their lack of support for the US's long-time ally:
