Hillary Clinton slammed the New York Times for its publication of an article that effectively erases her run for the oval office in 2016.
On early Saturday, the New York Times ran an op-ed by Maureen Dowd that makes the egregious claim that “it has been 36 years since a man and a woman ran together on a Democratic party ticket.” The claim, which has since been removed from Twitter, ignored Clinton’s 2016 run, which she did with the mostly forgettable Tim Kaine as her running mate.
The article it linked to, titled “No Wrist Corsages, Please,” contained the same statement. It has also been amended to now read: “It’s hard to fathom, but it took another 36 years for a man to choose to put a woman on the Democratic ticket with him.”
It is curious as to how the New York Times managed to overlook the error before publishing the piece. As highlighted by the Washington Examiner’s Becket Adams, “there is no sentence where Dowd clarifies that she means it has been 36 years since a Democratic male nominee has chosen a female VP. the statement is simply: it has been 36 years since a Democratic man and woman split the ticket.”
“This obviously is not true,” he wrote. “Did the NYT's news division also purge opinion's fact-checkers?”
It’s worth noting that in 2008, Republican nominee Sen. John McCain picked a woman, Sarah Palin, as his running mate.
Dowd, a liberal writer who is most infamous for calling for a war in Iraq and slutshaming Monica Lewinsky for years, was lambasted on Twitter by none other than Hillary Clinton herself, who accused her of being high on drugs when she made the claim.
“Either [Tim Kaine] and I had a very vivid shared hallucination four years ago or Maureen had too much pot brownie before writing her column again,” wrote Clinton.
