Over 150 employees at Houston Methodist Hospital were terminated on Tuesday after refusing the to get the COVID-19 vaccine, a requirement by the hospital.
The hospital gave an ultimatum to enployees and told them that if they refused the COVID-19 vaccine injection by June 7th, they would be placed under a two week suspension.
Gale Smith, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said "Of the nearly 200 employees who had been suspended, 153 of them were terminated by the hospital on Tuesday or had resigned," according to the New York Times.
Smith also said that the employees who had complied with the hospital’s vaccine policy while they were under suspension were allowed to return to work a day after they became compliant. However, the hospital did not provide numbers as to how many workers returned to work after complying with the hospital’s forced vaccine policy.
Last month, a group of 117 staff members sued Houston Methodist Hospital to prevent the forced injection of the non-FDA approved vaccinations. The lawsuit, which remains ongoing, claims that it's illegal for their boss to require a vaccine as a condition of employment, and was filed by Jared Woodfill, a local lawyer, on behalf of the plaintiffs in Texas State Court.
The suit alleges that the vaccine requirements are a violation of the Nuremburg Code, an international document which prohibits things like medical procedures to be performed without the patient's consent.
One part of the complaint read, "Methodist Hospital is forcing its employees to be human 'guinea pigs' as a condition for continued employment."
All of the COVID-19 vaccines in use within the United States are currently allowed under emergency authorization by the Food and Drug Administration, and none of them has been formally approved in the long-term as of the time of this writing.
The requirement by the hospital may very soon wind up being illegal in Texas and nationwide. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has introduced a bill that would ban the federal government from being able to institute vaccine passports. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott plans to introduce a similar bill at the state level for the same purpose.
