An Iranian-owned boxing gym north of Toronto was struck by gunfire early Sunday morning, a day after US President Donald Trump confirmed reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader had been killed.
York Regional Police said officers responded to reports of shots fired around 3 am near Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue West in Thornhill. When they arrived, they found evidence that multiple rounds had been fired at a commercial building. The property was unoccupied at the time. No injuries were reported.
Police identified the business as Saliwan Boxing Gym. Video from the scene shows shattered front windows and visible damage to the entrance. Iranian flags and posters were displayed at the storefront.
Investigators told CityNews that the shooting appears to have been targeted. Authorities have not released suspect information and said the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident unfolded amid global tensions following confirmation of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader. In an interview with NBC News, Trump said of the reports, “We feel that is a correct story.” He added that “most” of Iran’s senior leadership had been killed. Later Saturday, Trump posted on Truth Social, confirming that Khamenei was dead.
