Jan 6 Committee seeks information from Rep. Kevin McCarthy regarding Capitol Riot

On Wednesday, the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack requested that Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy answer questions and provide records regarding his involvement before, during, and after the riot that took place at the Capitol just over a year ago.

As one of former president Trump's closest allies, Rep. McCarthy has been a target of the committee as they attempt to piece together what happened in the lead up to January 6.

According to the Associated Press, Democratic chairman of the committee Rep. Bennie Thompson has requested that Rep. McCarthy provide information and records regarding his knowledge of the events that took place, along with his communication with Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows, and the former president himself.

Rep. Thompson stated that the committee is set on uncovering "how the President's plans for January 6th came together, and all the other ways he attempted to alter the results of the election." He called out Rep. McCarthy for allegedly telling Meadows that any objection to the certification of Biden's victory "was doomed to fail."

As the January 6 Committee ramps up their investigation, other Republicans have been singled out as potentially valuable sources of information. Earlier this week, Rep. Jim Jordan was approached, but vehemently declined to participate.

"This request is far outside the bounds of any legitimate inquiry," Rep. Jordan said, adding that it "violates core Constitutional principles, and would further erode legislative norms."

Rep. Jordan told Rep. Thompson outright that he has "no relevant information that would assist the Select Committee in advancing any legitimate legislative purpose."

Rep. Jordan then slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her "failure to ensure the appropriate security posture at the Capitol complex" on January 6. He has repeatedly asked for records relating to that security posture, but has said that his inquiry has been obstructed by the Speaker's office, who has discretion over the Capitol Police.
