In a TikTok video posted online addressing the recent IVF court decision in Alabama, MSNBC host Joy Reid asked rhetorically, "Why do we need more kids?" and then said that Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) arguing that we need more kids "sounds slaveryish."

View on XThe video was uploaded as a reaction to Tuberville's response when he was asked about the case in Alabama which ruled that frozen embryos would be considered children. He stated that in the US "we need to have more kids."
Reid responded, then asking, "Who's the we?" that should have more kids. The MSNBC host then suggested that the senator was insisting that the federal government of the US should "mandate" people to have more kids to increase the population of the country and thought it was hypocritical that Republicans are against illegal immigration while not against having more kids.
Reid suggested that the country and that the Tuberville's state of Alabama also did not need more kids; however, she added, that there was a time when the southern state needed more kids, and that was during slavery.
"There was a time when the state of Alabama absolutely needed more kids, because, you know, Alabama was a slave state," Reid said. "And the mandate of the planter class in Alabama was for black women to produce more kids because those kids were property and they could work more kids and make more money on their plantations."
She went on to suggest that one of the reasons Tuberville said that Alabama needed more kids was to have them do the work that illegal immigrants are doing in the state.
"Are you saying the state of Alabama needs more kids because you think that those populations will include people who are destitute and desperate enough, if you kick out the immigrants, like a lot of y'all want to do and you can make them do the work that the migrants are doing now? ‘Cause that kinda sounds slaveryish."
She continued to insist, asking if that was why Tuberville had said that people in general need to have more kids. She was also open to the possibility that it could be him asking white people to have more kids to combat the "great replacement thing."
She suggested Tuberville could instead be "concerned that there's not enough white people in the population" versus other minorities.
