Trudeau Liberals to push ahead with internet regulations, Bill C-10 in new Parliament
The government “promised to bring in some bills very quickly” during the election. “C-10 is one of them. Why? Because it is fundamental,” said the heritage minister.
Trudeau's newest Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez will reintroduce the Liberal's controversial internet regulations that the government failed to pass during the last parliament, according to Blacklock's Reporter.
Despite committing an enormous amount of energy and political capital to unpopular internet regulations like Bill C-10, the government failed to pass the Bill through the Senate before it went into recess.
Despite this, the government "promised to bring in some bills very quickly" during the election. "C-10 is one of them. Why? Because it is fundamental," said the Heritage Minister.
"We made many promises to table important bills in the first 100 days and that includes the broadcasting bill," added Rodriguez. "We need that bill. We have to modernize it."
C-10 will regulate "user-generated content" on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, meaning these videos are subject to CRTC rulings.
Despite the Bill's significant criticisms, the Heritage Minister called C-10 "an absolute priority."
The Heritage Minister seemed to be open to slight reforms to the Bill. "We know freedom of expression is a pillar of our democracy and our country," said Rodriguez. "So we will be working with that.
