PPC leader Maxime Bernier was released late Friday night after being eight hours in police custody in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was arrested for speaking at an anti-lockdown rally.
Bernier's lawyers were able to get a bail hearing and get Bernier released on his recognizance by Justice of the Peace Mme. Becker.
According to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JFFC)'s website, they have "already filed a legal challenge in Manitoba maintaining that these health orders are an unjustified violation of Canadians’ fundamental Charter rights," and plan to pursue this and other legal challenges against the lockdowns countrywide.
Bernier has already spoken in Barrie, Vancouver, Edmonton. This latest rally was at St. Pierre Jolys, about a half an hour's drive south of Winnipeg.
The rally was attended by slightly more than a dozen people. However, the RCMP pulled his car over as he was leaving the event, handcuffed and arrested him.
Martin Masse, a spokesperson for the People's Part of Canada (PPC), stated that Bernier was "wrongfully arrested" and that his Charter rights were violated. "This isn’t about COVID anymore. It’s political repression. This is the kind of stuff countries like China and Russia do."
Bernier was issued two tickets for the alleged lockdown violations, and has pleaded not guilty. His court date has been set for late July 2021, and the JFFC will be acting in his defence.
