Most Americans do not believe Trump acted illegally in New York fraudulent docs case: AP/NORC poll

Overall, 35 percent of Americans said that Trump acted illegally in the case, while 31 percent said he acted unethically, but not illegally. An additional 14 percent said he did nothing wrong, while 19 percent said they "don’t know enough to say."

Democrats were the most likely to say that Trump acted illegally, with 62 percent responding as such. Just 6 percent of Republicans and 32 percent of independents responded as such. Republicans were more likely to say that Trump either acted unethically (40 percent) or did nothing wrong (28 percent).

Just over half of Americans, 51 percent, said they would not consider Trump fit for office if he is found guilty in the case. This is driven by Democrats, with 83 percent saying he would not be fit, while 47 percent of independents and 16 percent of Republicans responded as such.

Around 4 in 10 Americans also said that they had little or no confidence that state or federal officials were treating Trump fairly, with 44 percent saying such of state prosecutors in New York, 42 percent saying this of Georgia state prosecutors, and 45 percent saying such of federal prosecutors.

The poll, released on Tuesday by AP/NORC, came on the second day of the trial where six jurors of the 12-person jury were selected. Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents related to payments to then-attorney Michael Cohen, with the charges being raised to felonies by Bragg who alleged these alleged crimes were in service to bigger crimes. He has not named those crimes.

The poll was conducted between April 4 and 8 with 1,204 American adults and has a margin of error of 3.9 percent.
