Nearly HALF of Ontarians hospitalized with COVID-19 are there for non-COVID reasons

Data released by the Ontario government on Tuesday shows that 46 percent of all cases admitted were there for other reasons. Of the 3,220 people in hospital with COVID-19, about 1,740 are in for COVID-related reasons.

The change in public reporting came after a period where the two were not differentiated. The situation in ICUs also shows that a considerable amount of those with COVID-19 are in for non-COVID reasons.

Of people in ICU with COVID-19, 83 percent were admitted for COVID-related reasons, and 17 were admitted for other reasons.

"We are updating Ontario’s public reporting to distinguish patients hospitalized due to #COVID19 from those admitted for other reasons with COVID-19," said Health Minister Christine Elliott via Twitter on Tuesday. "While this doesn't change the serious situation in Ontario's hospitals, it is important to share this data to provide additional context on the state of the pandemic."

In Ontario, 28,693,247 vaccine doses have been administered, with over 141,000 doses administered yesterday.

91.1 percent of Ontarians 12+ have one dose and 88.5 percent have two doses.

There are 7,951 new cases of COVID-19 in Ontario reported Tuesday.
