On Tuesday, Peel Regional Police received a report that students at Cawthra Park Secondary School burned a pride flag, and then deliberately circulated video of such on social media.
Police have commented that they are treating this as a potential hate crime, and that they have launched an ongoing investigation in order to further ascertain the facts of the case.
According to CTV News, The Peel District School Board (PDSB) has released a statement on the incident:
"PDSB and the administration at Cawthra Park Secondary School are aware of a video showing individuals burning a pride flag,"
"The PDSB and Cawthra Park Secondary School condemn this hateful act of homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. We take this very seriously and have begun an investigation."
The school's principal, Tyler Mcleod, also had a statement:
"I am truly sorry for the harm caused by this incident. As a learning community, we are committed to increasing our individual and collective skills and understanding to clearly confront racist acts and to ensure our school environment is safe and aligns with PDSB’s values of educating our learners through an anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens."
June has, for the last 22 years, been considered "pride month" and institutions like schools often focus heavily on related issues during this month. Flying rainbow flags during this month is often seen as a gesture of solidarity.
