O’Toole, Pierre, Scheer condemn Trudeau’s quest for unrestricted power to December 2021

With the legislation set to be introduced on Tuesday, Conservatives from a variety of positions quickly flocked to social media to heavily condemn the Trudeau government's proposition.

A post from Conservative Party Leadership candidate Erin O'Toole directly calls out the prime minister for refusing to declare a State of Emergency, but now says that "seeking unrestrained powers that would be dramatically greater than more limited powers in Emergency Measures legislation"—powers that would continue until December of 2021.

The post continues: "It is very disappointing to see the Liberal government using a national emergency to avoid any oversight of their actions. No crisis should permit our parliamentary democracy to be undermined."

A Twitter post from prominent Conservative Pierre Poilievre calls the move by the Trudeau Liberals an act of "bad faith," pointing to how consistantly cooperative the Conservative Party has been amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

"In this time of crisis, we assumed the government would act in good faith... But with this bill, it's clear that they're using this crisis to carry out a power grab."

Polilievre goes on to say that he spoke with Finance Minister Bill Morneau to tell him that the Conservatives are willing to work with the Liberals on a bill of their announced promises.

"But we will not approve any legislation that includes this type of power grab," he said.

Leader of the Official Opposition Andrew Scheer also let it rip on social media Monday night, announcing that he had full intention of fighting against Trudeau's "blank cheque."

"We will not give the government unlimited power to raise taxes without a parliamentary vote. We will authorize whatever spending measures are justified to respond to the situation, but we will not sign a blank cheque,” Scheer said in a statement.
